Objects:
To provide lecture - and tutorial - room and office accomodation for extended courses in the Faculty of Arts, arising from formation of new Departments of Education, Philosophy, Geography, Modern Languages, and possibly Statistics, from the institution of an Honours degree, a Diploma in Education, and a Diploma and Certificate in Social Study.
To provide an extended Great Hall large enough
for assemblies of the whole University.
The Main Building, opened in 1912, and including a Great Hall, was intended for a University of no more than 500 undergraduates. By 1954-55 it is estimated that at least 1,000 will be attending courses throughout the Faculties. Numbers at the date of submission of this application are above 700. Provision was made in the original plans of the Main Building and Great Hall for Extensions such as it is now proposed to carry out.
Division of Costs;
Cost of provision of such accomodation is to be divided equally between funds allocated under C.D. & W., and C. & M.E.3. votes, as detailed in the tel. 1900 of 1950 from the Secretary of State for the Colonies to the Governor Hong Kong.
Administrative & Financial Control;
The University of Hong Kong has been recognized as an administering authority for the purpose of administrative and financial control of monies allocated from the C.D. & W. fund. Secretary of State tel. 1900 of
Dec. 22, 1950, refers.
Availability of Men & Materials;
Local labour is available for implementation of the project, and is called on by the firm of contractors whose tender for the work is accepted.
Steel for the project has been released by the Belgian Government and is in process of shipment. Fittings and finishings are available on option from the United Kingdom. For purchase of these items sums have been allocated equally from C.D. & W. and C. & M.E.S. Funds. Secretary of State tel. 399 of March 22, 1951, to the Governor Hong Kong refers.
